The saying goes, bend the tree while it is still young. But how do you bend it without having to use your hands? The new law, which the government aims to implement prevents parents from disciplining their children in an aggressive manner in which they find fit. In other words, parents no longer have a right to punish their children with corporal punishment. So what is left to be done? Would it be applicable to implement the practice of the law? Firstly, coming from a young man's perspective, I believe it is pointless. A good spanking is very familiar to me, because it was the only method of discipline that would influence me to know my right from wrong even though it hurt for a few minutes, but it influenced me to become a wise. And I believe for many others also. However, it was normal that I did not then understand the reason behind the punishment, but today I look back and can thank my parents for their kind of punishment. I look around me and see how modern children no longer get a spanking. They back chat their parents and strike back. I find it ridiculous, because they have no respect towards their parents. Charity begins at home. Once a good foundation of values is set within the bounds of the household it wouldn’t become a social issue. Parents use violence as the only acceptable method to discipline their children in order for children to understand that it is needed to prevent them from making mistakes. As well as to bring about a sense of hierarchical respect between parent and child... But sometimes when I look around me, I am disappointed because children do not have a sense of respect towards their own teachers; it influences the authority of the teachers to diminish. That is why on a daily basis there are new and inhumane stories that arise amongst various schools. Violence increases to a great extent and failure rates. It is also found that the attitudes of children are ignorant. But on a positive note, I understand why the law will be implemented. Because there are many cases of abuse. Emotional trauma that the children experience can have a detrimental effect towards their mental growth. The law can be a voice for the victims, but the consequences could be unfavourable. Parents should not be a victim of children because the law is stating that children have more power and authority than their own parents. Children needs discipline in order to make correct decisions in life , and the influential disciplining hand of their parents should be a guide for children to know their place within the household. Yes, times have changed, but discipline and respect is the unspoken rule that a child should carry at all times.

The new South African way of Discipline
